What is The Purpose of The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision Course?

The qualification is designed to train people to become site supervisors or assistant site managers. The qualification is aimed at those who are looking for recognition of their prior learning and experience in their chosen industry. Learners can then build on the skills and knowledge gained from achievement of this qualification when working towards achieving another qualification or gaining employment.

The construction site supervision diploma will provide a great basis for working in the subject area for a range of potential learners.

The qualification will lead the learner to one or more of the following objectives:

  • Supporting a role in the workplace
  • Confirming occupational competence
  • Preparing learners to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding

The primary purpose of this qualification is to confirm the learner’s occupational competence as a Site Supervisor and Assistant Site Manager. On completion, the work-related competency-based qualification will provide confirmation to employers, industry managers and card schemes that the learner has the skills and knowledge needed to carry out the role of a site supervisor and assistant site manager.

How Is the Qualification Assessed?

The NVQ level 4 construction site supervision qualification is assessed by completing a portfolio of evidence which details what learners have completed at work through a variety of evidence such as observation, professional discussion, witness testimony and supporting documentary evidence.  The assessor can work alongside the learner to confirm that they have met the requirements of the qualification and that they are therefore competent in their role.

Competence is displayed through the assessor observing the learner demonstrate that they carry out their normal work activities competently and to the industry standard and comply with currently legislation and company procedures.  The assessment process will ensure that the learner can complete the tasks that they have been directed to undertake and that they can interpret the instructions correctly.  They will demonstrate that they can select the appropriate resources for the task. They will also demonstrate that they can complete tasks within the given timescales and specifications.

What Does the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision Cover?

As this is a competence-based qualification, learners will be acquiring the knowledge and skills required through on-the-job experience or in a learning environment.

This qualification has a range of pathways and is linked to typical job roles that learners will encounter within the industry.

To achieve the whole qualification learners will require a minimum of 123 credits. Learners must complete 6 mandatory units plus all of the required credits from one pathway from the following structures:

This qualification is included as the competence component within the Higher Apprenticeship in Construction Management.

Candidates may wish to do this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship, or on its own. If candidates complete this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship, they will be required to undergo additional training, over and above the core qualification, in areas including employment rights and responsibility and/or English and Maths.   


Learners may progress from the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision to Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management. This qualification is for Managers working on construction sites and it provides pathways for those who want to specialise in:
