Who is an SMSTS course for?

The SMSTS course, is the Site Management Safety Training Scheme and the qualification comes from the CITB, who are the Industry Training Board for the construction industry.

If you’re a construction professional thinking about how to progress your career, ready to take that next step up, this is the course for you. It’s designed to advance your knowledge about enforcing the health and safety code of practice on any construction site, and could be the first step towards helping you to secure a more senior position within your organisation.

This is ideal for site managers, agents and quantity surveyors. Construction and project directors will also benefit from the SMSTS training course too. If you’re responsible for a team of workers, and your role includes planning, organising and monitoring their output in a safe, industry-compliant way, this course is tailored to you.

If you’re a site manager applying for a new job, you may also find that your employer will expect you to have this certificate, to show that you’re fully equipped for the role.

Do I have to meet any requirements for an SMSTS course?

As with most courses, there are a few mandatory entry level requirements, to ensure this is the right qualification for you. As well as providing a valid ID on the first day of the course, the ability to read, write and understand English will also be needed. Please contact us if you have any concerns about this.

You should also be aware of the commitment you’re making. As well as the financial commitments, you should also make sure you’re prepared to put in the work, and study hard so that you pass first time, as well as get the most from the course possible.

If you aren’t new to the SMSTS course, you might be taking a refresher – you’ll need to renew this certificate every five years before it expires by taking the SMSTS Refresher course.

What will I learn from the SMSTS course?

The SMSTS course is designed to help you work towards improving the health and safety of your construction site and everyone on it.

With this in mind, it will cover everything from how to complete risk assessments, to how to identify and control hazards across a number of areas, from electricity work and excavations, to scaffolding and confined spaces. Click here to find the full list of what’s covered on the course.

The course runs for five days, culminating in a multiple choice exam. You can also expect case studies and exercises along the way.
